It's the age-old question posted to Newcastle United fans for years - would you prefer a Champions League spot or to lift a trophy?

Newcastle have been starved for silverware for so long that other clubs' fanbases use the whole "Newcastle haven't won a trophy since man landed on the moon" stick to beat us with at any given opportunity.

However, the club is now on the up and fighting to be part of that Premier League top four, the positions reserved for the much-coveted Champions League places, is a regular goal.

So the question often asked is would fans prefer to lift the Carabao Cup or return to the Champions League? It's a question that has now been asked of Toon legend Alan Shearear.

Alan Shearer believes Marc Guehi's signing could make all the difference

Alan Shearer has been speaking to Betfair (via The Mirror) where he said that the target for Newcastle will be to win a trophy.

"For Newcastle the main target would be to win a trophy. I wouldn't care which one but I'd take a trophy all day rather than finishing in the top four. Give me the choice of finishing fourth or a trophy? Trophy. No doubt about it considering we haven’t won one since 1969.

“Newcastle have to avoid the injuries - that killed them last season so for them to do well, they'll have to avoid injuries. It's been a tough summer for Newcastle with Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi leaving and with the speculation around Eddie Howe and England.

"Hopefully things will settle down and we're able to make another signing or two.

Shearer also weighed in on the Marc Guehi saga claiming that if the Magpies were to get the deal done it could really help Newcastle into the top four.

“It'll be a real statement if Newcastle spend £55million-£60million on a central defender. Guehi was one of England's best players at the Euros so if they can get him then it'd be a real statement signing. I think Liverpool will finish in the top four again.

"I'd be hopeful of Newcastle because they haven't got European football to contend with this year so in terms of injuries and squad availability, that should help them. If they can get a free run, then I'd be hopeful that Newcastle could finish fourth.”

In a world where the BBC's main football writer has us finishing ninth, it's nice to have Alan Shearer bringing back the positivity.
