Newcastle United take on Brentford at St James' Park tonight in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup.

Kick-off in tonight's game is at 7:45pm and will be shown live on Sky Sports+ which can be streamed on the Sky Sports App.

A winner must be found on the night and in the event of a draw, the game will go straight to penalties. Extra time doesn't come into play until the semi-final stage of the competition.

The winner of tonight's game goes into the semi-final which will be played over two legs.

VAR will not be used in tonight's game

As we've previously mentioned, Sean Longstaff will miss tonight's game through suspension after accumulating two yellow cards in the competition already. Meanwhile, Joelinton, who picked up his fifth booking of the season against Leicester on Saturday is eligible to play in the Carabao Cup but will miss Saturday's game against Ipswich.

The one rule that many may not be aware of which affects tonight's game is that there will be no VAR, so the referee will not have the safety net of Stockley Park should he make a wrong decision.

VAR has been a cause for a lot of controversy, but it has got to the point now that we'll miss it when it's not there, so we hope there'll be no marginal offsides that the officials get wrong tonight.

The crowd at St James' Park can make all the difference tonight

Like extra time, VAR comes into play at the semi-final stage of the Carabao Cup.

Newcastle sees this as a must-win game while Eddie Howe and the players have repeatedly spoken about going on to win the competition this season.

Brentford may feel they have the psychological upper hand after beating Newcastle 4-2 just over a week ago but this time Newcastle have the St James' Park factor which should swing things back our way.
