Alan Shearer purrs over 'sensational' Newcastle man after his performance on Saturday

Newcastle United bagged a much-needed away victory on Saturday as they overcame a spirited Nottingham Forest side to win 3-2 at the City Ground.

A goal from Fabian Schar was the meat in the sandwich of two superb Bruno Guimaraes goals as the Brazilian had an inspired game for the Magpies.

After the game, Bruno admitted that he wasn't 100% sure he'd play after being ill throughout the week. Whatever it was that he had must have flushed all the bad out of his system as he was back to being the Bruno we've been worshipping for two years.

Bruno was back to his best against Nottingham Forest

Guimaraes opened the scoring by volleying home a deep Kieran Trippier cross as part of a rehearsed set-piece routine, but this being Bruno it wasn't just any volley, it was poked home with the outside of his boot. He made it look simple but it was anything but.

His second goal which won the game for the Magpies came after he pounced on a short pass out the back by Forest. Bruno anticipated the error and was onto it like a flash, he took a touch to move it where he wanted and unleashed a fizzing shot into the bottom corner from about 20 yards.

Speaking on the latest The Rest Is Football podcast, Alan Shearer was practically swooning while talking about Guimaraes' performance. (Newcastle talk starts around 25 minutes in).

"I thought Bruno Guimaraes was sensational with his two goals. [He played] a more advanced role didn't he?, he played a little bit more forward.

"But what about his finish? You know from the ball in from Trippier from the set piece? I mean the volley was just .. it's one of the most difficult things to do with the ball coming from where it is and to hit it with that first foot, the right foot as he did is an incredible finish; a really, really tough finish but brilliant. Great win for the Toon."

It feels like a long time since we got so emotional about Bruno when it wasn't based off a story around him leaving the club.

The confidence boost that performance will have given him will be enormous and we expect to see more classic Guimaraes going forward.
