Yesterday Newcastle United fans were excited when the story broke that the Magpies had approached Crystal Palace about signing winger Michael Olise.

The 22-year-old has been outstanding for Palace recently and it's little surprise that his form has brought several top clubs to Crystal Palace's door to ask about his availability.

Newcastle are believed to be one such club, but Chelsea are thought to be near the front of the queue with both Manchester Clubs, Liverpool and Bayern Munich also keen.

However, Chelsea and Newcastle will find themselves at a huge disadvantage should Liverpool, Bayern Munich or Manchester City opt to activate Olise's £60million release clause.

Newcastle will have to do things the hard way if they want to sign Michael Olise

Olise's release clause has a condition that excludes Newcastle

As revealed by The Times the clause contains a condition that it can only be activated by a club competing in the Champions League which of course, Newcastle, Chelsea and Manchester United are not.

That means that Crystal Palace have the right to turn down any bids made by us, whereas Champions League sides are free to speak to the player.

It doesn't completely rule out those non-Champions League clubs, but it does make things considerably more difficult.

Newcastle look to make another statement signing this summer

For a lot of fans though, it's not so much that we thought we would sign Olise, but more that we're showing the ambition that we're at least willing to try.

Not only that, but it shows there's potential for the Magpies to make a statement signing again this summer if we're competing for a player with a £60million fee attached to them.

We're not giving up hope just yet because anything can happen, but any move for Michael Olise by Newcastle is going to be met with fierce competition.
