Newcastle United and England full-back Kieran Trippier recently sat down with Gary Neville for The Overlap looking back over his impressive career.

Kieran Trippier joined Newcastle as the first signing of the PIF era, coming from Atletico Madrid for £13million in January 2022 while the Magpies were rooted to the bottom of the table.

The former Tottenham Hotspur defender took a pay cut to come to Newcastle and also didn't demand a relegation clause in his contract despite the fact that Eddie Howe would have to break records to keep Newcastle in the Premier League - something he of course did.

That's all pretty common knowledge at this point, but one thing The Overlap interview did reveal that we weren't aware of was just how close Trippier came to joining Manchester United before he came to the Toon.

Kieran Trippier almost signed for Manchester United before Newcastle

Trippier told Gary Neville that he almost joined the club he supported as a kid in the summer before his eventual move to Newcastle six months later.

"[Manchester] United did (make an approach) straight after the Euros and that was very close. Obviously growing up being a Red as well, me with all my family but it didn't happen and everything happens for a reason."

After that fell apart Trippier remained at Madrid until Eddie Howe came calling in the January.

Trippier's final days at Tottenham sound very similar to last season at Newcastle

Earlier in the interview Trippier talks about why he left Tottenham for Madrid and the similarities between then and now are pretty striking.

"I think I was a bit suspect at Tottenham in my last season when I was there. When you're getting caught out and you're playing people onside and it's all about fine margins. It was just a consistent basis and I just wanted the season to end. I just felt like I was being suffocated because I wasn't performing."

We're not saying that Kieran Trippier is leaving this summer but he's on the list of first-team players who could find themselves looking for a new club, and it may be for similar reasons.

Tripps' form last season took a nosedive towards the back end of 2023 and then a calf injury hit and kept him out for way longer than expected, and when he returned he looked way off the pace.

A lot of fans have speculated that something is going on behind the scenes, and it could just be a case of history repeating. Only time will tell.
