Normally with a story like this we'd say that the co-owner has broken his silence over Newcastle United's approach for Marc Guehi but the Crystal Palace chairman has been anything but silent.

Steve Parish angered Newcastle by speaking publicly about their approach for Marc Guehi while talks were still ongoing.

It was a sign if ever there was one that the deal wasn't progressing as well as Newcastle would have liked and many fans believed that Newcastle should have walked away the second Parish went public.

In hindsight, they were right. Parish never had any intention of selling to Newcastle after they offered a job to his director of football Dougie Freedman earlier in the summer.

Steve Parish says it was 'impossible' for Palace to sell Marc Guehi

Parish has now spoken about the transfer saga and why they kept hold of Marc Guehi, blaming the sale of Joachim Andersen to Fulham - which was entirely done while Newcastle and Palace were in talks over Guehi - and an injury to Chadi Riad, which turned out to be nothing.

Newcastle World have quoted Parish speaking to Sky Sports News about the deal.

"I don't think the window worked out exactly the same format that we thought it would. Maybe we thought at the beginning it'd be more likely that Marc Guehi went and we kept Joachim Andersen.

"We accepted that bid [for Andersen] which then made it very difficult really to sell both of our starting centre-backs in one window.

"That's not to say it wasn't still an outside possibility that we got to the right number but then Chadi Riad got injured. That doesn't look quite as bad as it seems but it still left us very light and really made it impossible for us to consider at that point.”

Parish hasn't ruled out Guehi to Newcastle happening in the future

Parish went on to almost praise Newcastle while suggesting that a deal could be done in the future. Although, whether Newcastle would deal with Parish again is another matter.

"We're proud of the fact that Michael Olise's gone to Bayern Munich. “We want to be selling to the top clubs, or top clubs like Newcastle who've got great aspirations and have recently been in the Champions League.

"So we have to manage all of those things. We won't get really great young talent to come to us if they think they're going to be stuck.

"We want to be playing in the Champions League. The reality is we don't right now. That's what players want to achieve in their career and we respect that and we respect the fact that sometimes we're going to be a pathway to that."
