Who owns Newcastle United?

On 7 October 2021, Newcastle United was sold to a consortium comprised of the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF), PCP Capital Partners and the Reuben Brothers.

The ownership is split 80% PIF, 10% PCP and 10% Reuben Brothers.

Who are the owners?

PIF is the sovereign wealth fund of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A sovereign wealth fund is a state-owned investment fund which invests in real and financial assets. According to the SWF Institute, it is the eighth wealthiest in the world. It's Governor is Yasir Al-Rumayyan, who became the Newcastle United chairman upon the acquisition of the club.

PCP Capital Partners is the firm founded by Amanda Staveley, an organisation which assists in corporate transactions, notably Abu Dhabi's purchase of Manchester City in 2008. Staveley runs the company with her husband, Mehrdad Ghodoussi.

The Reuben Brothers are David and Simon Reuben, Indian-born British businessmen. David's son, Jamie Reuben, is the person most publicly involved in the ownership of Newcastle.

How much is Newcastle United worth?

The true worth of the club is somewhat subjective, though the club itself was purchased for £305million. The website Transfermarkt recently valued Newcastle's squad at a total of £367million, meanwhile other assets include St James' Park and the training ground complex at Darsley Park.

The total worth of the PIF is an estimated £320billion, making them the richest owners in world football.

How much did Newcastle United cost?

The club was purchased for £305million from St James' Holdings, the company Mike Ashley set up to acquire the club in 2007.

How rich are Newcastle United now?

Despite the wealth of the owners, the club is restricted by financial rules, including UEFA's Financial Fair Play and the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability rules. A club's available expenditure is dependent on pre-tax profits over a three-year period; it's not as easy as a wealthy benefactor constantly injecting cash into a club, as was the case with earlier examples this century. This has been efficiently explained in a Newcastle context by both Swiss Ramble and contributors to True Faith.

How much did Mike Ashley pay for Newcastle United?

Mike Ashley purchased 100% of the club in July 2007 for a total fee of £134million.
