Tyneside-based sports lawyer John Devine joins United's legal team
Following the announcement of MLS supremo Darren Eales becoming the club's CEO, Craig Hope has revealed that Muckle LLP's John Devine has joined the club's legal team.
What we know of John Devine
- He is with Newcastle-based law firm Muckle LLP working with "athletes, agents, sporting organisations and governing bodies on a wide range of sports-related legal issues."
- He was recently involved in legal matters regarding the ownership of Chelsea FC, listed as one of six Chelsea Foundation trustees with stewardship over the club in the midst of Roman Abramovich's departure
What is his role?
- It is presumed that, at United, Devine will be working on "a variety of legal matters across the club's business, including player transfers, intellectual property matters, corporate governance and compliance matters," according to a recent job advertisement
- Hiring a proper General Counsel in-house assists the club in a variety of ways, including: not having to spend exorbitant fees attaining external legal advice; having a person dedicated to considering risk mitigation; and having someone dedicated to working with outside counsel and business people
