Transfers: Matt Ritchie set to leave the club?

Eddie Howe has raised suspicion that former Scottish International Matt Ritchie may be following fellow promotion pack colleagues Isaac Hayden, Ciaran Clark and Dwight Gayle out of the door.

“It wasn’t farewell or intentional from my side,” Howe said, referring to Ritchie's appearance from the bench against Burnley on the last day of the season.
“I think it’s well documented my relationship with Matty, we go so far back.
“The respect for him I have as a person - he’s been incredible for me.
“Matty’s own personal situation: he will have his own thoughts. Mine is to try and keep him but it’s well documented that Matty has been a way from his family for a long period of time.
“He loves playing for Newcastle and is very passionate about the club. But I think it is unclear what direction we will take this year but from both sides there is a lot of respect.”

  • Ritchie joined the club in 2016 along with a raft of other arrivals, with the intention of getting Newcastle back to the Premier League at the first attempt
  • His contribution that season was outstanding, contributing twelve goals and 8 assists from 42 appearances
  • Ritchie is 32 now and has one year left on his contract
  • Only Gary Speed has worn the number 11 shirt more times (285) than Ritchie (188) in the post-1992 era. Damien Duff (86), Peter Lovenkrands (85), Scott Sellars (75) and Faustino Asprilla (62) are the others to have worn the shirt more than 50 times.
