It was a tough night in Dortmund for Newcastle United last night and Bruno Guimaraes couldn't hide his disappointment.

Newcastle fans are nursing sore heads and heavy hearts this morning as they watched their side wilt under the pressure in Germany.

Although it wasn't an awful team performance, some individuals were playing way below their usual high standard and Newcastle ultimately paid the price.

Our big players keep going missing in the big games

We, as a fanbase, expect, nay, demand more from the likes of Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes on big nights like last night, especially when the squad is so barebones.

It takes a player of their stature and their experience to step up and lead by example and unfortunately, neither player was at their best last night.

We're not trying to point fingers as that doesn't really get us anywhere, but it's hard to sit back and watch our top players have mediocre games when they need to be at their best.

With so many injuries it does feel unfair to be too critical

After the game Bruno Guimaraes spoke to Sky Sports and the £40million signing from Lyon couldn't hide his disappointment.

“Very disappointed, I think the first goal was hard.

“I think the second half we had the chance to score, we didn’t and after we took another goal.

“Bad day in the office, so disappointed, I think we should play much better in the second half.”

The chance Bruno is referring to was the missed header by Joelinton after the player of the match, Tino Livramento put in the perfect cross. When that chance went begging we knew it wasn't our night.

It is what it is though, and it's hard to be too critical of the side when they're playing so many games at the moment as Eddie Howe's rotation options are all laid up on the treatment table.
