Fabrizio Romano has now issued an update on the long-running Kalvin Phillips saga via X.

Newcastle United have reportedly been near the top of the list as the next destination for the forgotten Manchester City man, but have faced competition from Juventus with journalists torn on which club the England international would choose.

While this has bubbled on in the background, other Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, have started to take an interest in Phillips too.

Fabrizio Romano says Juventus have made a decision on Phillips

This morning, however, Fabrizio Romano put out a tweet/post/x/thing that suggests one obstacle in Newcastle's way has been removed.

Romano claims that Juventus have pulled out of the race following talks with Man City.

"Juventus have no intention to proceed for Kalvin Phillips deal at current conditions after talks with Man City on loan fee/salary coverage.

"Newcastle remain interested in Kalvin Phillips, race open to more clubs."

Eddie Howe has to box clever this month

While Romano didn't specify, it would be a safe bet to assume that the conditions he hinted at is the whopping £5million fee Man City want just to loan the 28-year-old.

That's what could be putting off Newcastle too as they have to balance strengthening the squad with staying inside the Profit and Sustainability rules.

Although Eddie Howe hinted yesterday that nothing is close in terms of incoming players and that the club haven't even identified targets, we can take that with a pinch of salt along with everything else Howe says at press conferences.
