Newcastle v Southampton Player Ratings: Toon triumph, as Saints sink

Key Highlights

  • Southampton certainly came out to disrupt Newcastle's rhythm at the start of the game, and it worked for them at first. The Toon were frustrated in attack for the opening 20 minutes
  • That was changed at the 24th minute mark when that man again, Miggy, broke the deadlock. He makes it eight goals so far this season, compared to Grealish who has one
  • Saints should have scored late on, but Elyounoussi somehow put it well wide of the open goal
  • Adam had a big chance on the 55th minute, but he blazed it well wide of the mark
  • Coming on at half-time, Wood gave Newcastle a two-goal lead early on as he took his chance well on the turn to slot home
  • With a foul on Schar, a great advantage from the ref saw Trippier spring to life to open up the field for Willock. One-on-one with the keeper, he kept his cool and gave Newcastle their third goal of the game
  • Saints score a late goal to stop clean sheet
  • Just in case Saints thought they had a chance, Bruno once again shows why he's magic as he scores Newcastle's fourth

Goals

Miggy (24)

Wood (55)

Willock (62)

Bruno (91)

Player Ratings

Nick Pope - 8

With just two games left before the World Cup, Pope showed once again to the watching England manager why he's worth taking on the plane.

Kieran Trippier - 10

Another unbelievable game for the stand-in captain. Trippier has oozed class since joining and he continues to show exactly what he's made of. With the talk of England lacking quality Right Backs for the World Cup, it looks like Trippier is the best England has to offer.

Fabian Schär - 8

Calm and collected once again by Schar. His class in defence and ease of attack is always a joy to watch.

Sven Botman - 7

Not Botman's best performance, but another win for the team is all that matters. Though he'll be disappointed to lose the clean sheet late on.

Dan Burn - 9

It probably looked like a nightmare match-up pre-game, with Burn facing off against Theo Walcott. The new local hero in Toon was able to deal with Theo all game, as he once again put in a great performance at Left Back in front of Southgate

Joe Willock - 9

Willock has been so close to scoring for weeks now, and he finally got one today. Willock has gone mostly unnoticed on this incredible run but he's been a major part in Howe's incredible attack and defence.

Bruno Guimarães - 10

Cool, calm, and collected. Bruno was his peak self once again today, and Southampton had no way to deal with all game. With a starting role at the World Cup on the cards for Bruno, he's proven once again why Howe brought him in. Topped off by another outside the box goal late on.

Sean Longstaff - 9

Another workman like performance for Sean, who while he won't go to the World Cup we're sure he's been in the conversation. He even bagged himself Player of the Match from Sky Sports

Miguel Almirón - 9

It's another goal for Miggy who took his tally to eight. The goal came from the sort of luck he would never have got last season. He pulled up late on, and was taken off as a precaution by Howe.

Jacob Murphy- 7

Full of running once again, but certainly not one of the main attacking threats. However, his work rate is match only by Miggy, but Murphy always looks like someone keeping his position warm for someone else.

Callum Wilson - 6

A quiet game for WIlson, who came off at half-time. Howe said in the week that WIlson wasn't feeling well, which probably explains why he looked a little out of it today.

Subs - 8

Wood came off the bench for Wilson at half-time, as he secured his first goal of the season with a well taken finish. Maxi was full of tricks when he arrived, while the loss of the clean sheet late on will hurt the defenders that came on late

Our Newcastle v Southampton Man of the Match: Willock

A huge goal and another huge performance. Often going unrecognized by many, but we won't let that happen today.
