Crystal Palace and Newcastle United's negotiations over Marc Guehi show no signs of coming to an end.
The two clubs are both trying their hardest to get the best of the deal which is causing the negotiations to drag on way beyond what Newcastle would have wanted.
As Liam and I discussed in our Weekly Roundup on Sunday, Newcastle can't really win now - Crystal Palace either get to keep Marc Guehi or they get whatever money they want. Even if Newcastle come out of this with Marc Guehi, Palace can still feel like they've won, so we might as well just give them what they want and let them claim the victory - at least that way we get the player out of it.
However, The Telegraph has claimed that the Magpies will walk away from negotiations if the standoff continues.
Indeed, their report says that the Magpies will walk away and look elsewhere if Palace don't agree to the sale of Guehi by the weekend.
Newcastle still need a centre-back, they're not just trying to sign Guehi because they think his name will look good on the back of our shirts, there's a genuine need to fill that position with the best possible player they can get.
Ideally, that would be Guehi, but Newcastle can't run the risk of letting this drag on to deadline day and the whole thing falls apart leaving them with no new defender.
There are plenty of alternatives out there, most of which will cost a lot less than what we could end up spending on Guehi. It just feels like a case of it coming too far to just abandon it all now.
Newcastle still need a right winger through the door before the transfer window closes, not to mention there are still rumours that Newcastle are prepared to try again to sign James Trafford from Burnley, because what club doesn't need six goalkeepers?
Personally, I'm just looking forward to an end to this saga as trying to find new ways to create a thumbnail using Marc Guehi is getting harder and harder with each story.
