Sandro Tonali received a hero's welcome when he was brought on by Eddie Howe this afternoon.

The big question this week would be whether or not Sandro Tonali would feature in the clash between Newcastle and Crystal Palace.

The 23-year-old Italian has had a hellish week after being sent home from the Italy camp after it was revealed that he was being investigated for a breach of betting rules stemming back from his days at AC Milan.

Tonali had a place on the bench for Eddie Howe today

The £55 million man had to make do with a place on the bench as Eddie Howe named his team to face Roy Hodgson's side.

With Newcastle 4-0 up and cruising thanks to goals from Jacob Murphy, Anthony Gordon, Sean Longstaff, and Callum Wilson, Howe made four changes just after the fourth goal went in.

Amongst the subs was Sandro Tonali who had been shown plenty of love throughout the first half each time he was sent out to warm up. The roar from the crowd as Tonali entered the field of play was deafening, with the Toon Army determined to show him that they were behind him in light of this week's news.

Sandro Tonali led the full-time victory lap to thank fans for their support

At full-time, Tonali showed his appreciation by leading the victory lap. He was a few yards ahead of the pack as if he wanted to personally thank every fan still left in the stadium.

Journalist Ciaran Kelly posted a video on X of Tonali leading the lap:

Newcastle now face an anxious wait to find out how long we will be without our new star with a decision expected as early as next week meaning this could have been Tonali's last game for Newcastle for a good while.
