Newcastle United fell to another heavy defeat yesterday after being on the receiving end of a 4-1 hiding from Tottenham Hotspur.
While there weren't any Newcastle players who came away from that match with any real dignity, there were certainly a couple who will be having a good look at themselves in the mirror this morning and wondering what went wrong.
Kieran Trippier made another couple of costly errors, Bruno Guimaraes looked like he was playing in dress shoes given that he couldn't stay on his feet, Fabian Schar might be due an eye test given his passing in the last couple of games and Alexander Isak needs to stop picking up the heavy boots before a game.
However, there was one man who Alan Shearer has been less than impressed with lately and that's Martin Dubravka.
The Slovakian goalkeeper is filling in the gap left by the injured Nick Pope but Shearer is not convinced he's the right man for the job and expects Newcastle to find a replacement sooner rather than later.
Shearer was analysing the game for the Premier League alongside a very dejected Jacob Murphy and an annoyingly happy Tim Sherwood, when Sherwood picked up on Shearer's tone when talking about Dubravka and piped up to ask if Shearer is not convinced by him.
“There’s a reason why he’s been number two, Nick Pope’s been brilliant for Newcastle in shot-stopping and everything else. Having not played for such a long time I get that it’s difficult to come into the team but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Newcastle went out and got a replacement for Pope in the next couple of weeks.
“I think it has to be (a priority) because if he gets injured then they’re in trouble and so to prepare and plan, I’d be amazed if they’re not looking at different ideas now to bring another goalkeeper in.”
When Nick Pope picked up his injury and it was confirmed he'd be missing for around four months, we didn't panic, thinking that Dubravka was an adequate replacement, but after the last two games where he's conceded seven goals (granted, not all his fault), we're now thinking that Big Al may have a point.
Aaron Ramsdale, get your coat, you're coming up north!
