Guardian exposes government connection to takeover

  • The paper reveals that Lord Gerry Grimstone, then Minister for Investment, conversed with Premier League officials about finding a solution to the delayed takeover
  • Documents released show Grimstone promising a response from the 'highest levels of Saudi government'
  • The matter of the Kingdom's control over PIF, and therefore needing to undertake the PL's Owners and Directors Test, was at the heart of the issues
  • A 2020 memo showed Grimstone claiming that a solution needed to be found to 'solve the conundrum' of the Kingdom hypothetically failing the test on piracy grounds
  • The proposed solutions were redacted from the memos
  • In response to questions from the Guardian, Grimstone said: “I made it very clear to [then PL Chairman] Mr Hoffman that my only role was to facilitate the passing of ideas between the PIF and EPL and that in no way did I seek to prejudice the EPL’s complete autonomy in this matter."
