Game week 5: Late sickener denies Newcastle deserved point at Anfield
LIVERPOOL 2-1 NEWCASTLE UNITED
An incredibly disciplined and dogged performance resulted in nothing as Liverpool snatched a late win at Anfield this evening. Alexander Isak took the lead and was harshly denied a second as the Reds came back to win 2-1; the winner from Fabio Carvalho coming eight minutes after the 90th minute, when only five were added on.
Nick Pope - 8
There was nothing the stopper could do with either goal but claimed cross after cross and was a confident presence throughout. Some wayward kicks, though.
Kieran Trippier - 7
Very assured performance and timed his tackles well; the England international was useful on the ball as always.
Jamaal Lascelles - 7
Lascelles put his body in the way in the way we've come to expect from the skipper.
Dan Burn - 8
Burn got his head to everything and timed his presses incredibly well, a great performance.
Matt Targett - 8
An intelligent performance all night from Targett, as he dealt with Salah's ingenuity from the first minute to the last.
Joe Willock - 7
Joe made a nuisance of himself off the ball, getting his toe on a few through balls and generally slowing Liverpool's play down well.
Sean Longstaff - 6
Started sloppy but made the goal for Isak. Might have got in the way of the winner but, like the rest of them, was dead on his feet by the end.
Joelinton - 8
An imperious performance as he patrolled the left-flank and made several tackles and blocks. Loses a point for not keeping the ball in the corner at the end.
Miguel Almiron - 7
You know what you get with Almiron; he ran all night.
Ryan Fraser - 7
A decent return to the side; like Almiron on the other side, he chased and harried effectively.
Alexander Isak - 8
An incredibly encouraging start. Only a controversial offside call prevented him from having two goals on the night. The one he was allowed he took incredibly well.
Subs - 6
Wood and Murphy did the defensive stuff well, though the former was very wasteful in possession. Anderson could've won it at the end.
Eddie Howe post-match interview
"That is painful
"I'm proud of the players, they executed the game plan very well.
"When you're in the lead here, naturally, it becomes a different game. We had to withstand pressure and defend very well. I don't remember them having too many clear cut chances. We defended really well. The last goal is a heartbeaker for us.
"Isak looked really good. We didn't anticipate him doing the whole game because he's not had loads of training and got a dead leg during the game too. He looks a special player.
"Everybody did well. I can't fault anyone, it was a great effort.
"It's a Premier League game, there's so much at stake, we had players fatigued and one day's less recovery than Liverpool.
"There was no gamesmanship from our point of view; just tired bodies. We wanted to slow the game down, they wanted to quicken it, so their frustration was natural."
Jurgen Klopp post-match interview snippet
"It was a difficult game; very passionate, aggressive, defending opponent. Difficult to get rhythm from a game like this.
"To score in 90+8 is the perfect response to that [Newcastle trying to slow the game down]."
