Game week 4: Late magic from ASM keeps unbeaten run going as Toon claim vital point at Wolves

Newcastle battled hard to earn a big point away to Wolves. Having dropped to an outstanding goal from Neves, it would take an equally (if not better) moment from ASM to bring it level. The side had two chances to win it late on, with Anderson hitting the post. Moments later, he broke into the box to secure NUFC a FK just outside the box. It was blasted inches wide by Schar, as the ref called FT.

The point moved the toon to 7th in the table as the unbeaten run continued. Despite a number of major injuries, the club continued to push. With Liverpool away and Palace at home in the next seven days, it could be an interesting week for the club. There's also the small matter of a transfer window closing and a debut for Isak to come.

Key moments

  • Isak wasn't able to start due to no work permit arriving in time
  • Another injury saw Bruno G not in the squad
  • A tough first half saw Newcastle fail to capitalize on their higher number of chances
  • Wolves broke the deadlock with a great goal from Neves
  • The game slowed in the second half with Newcastle making the first of the attacking changes
  • Subs from Howe made a huge impact, as Newcastle looked a lot better with fresh legs
  • An amazing goal in the final minutes of regular time from ASM took the game to 1-1
  • A late chance for Anderson hit the post, with the youngest just inches from winning it all
  • Anderson then won a FK late on, which went inches wide by Schar

Starting 11 - Pope, Trippier, Schar, Botman, Burn ( Targett 70), Longstaff, Joelinton, Willock (Anderson 83), ASM, Almiron (Murphy 83), Wood (Fraser 70),

Player ratings

Starting 11

Nick Pope - 8

Not much he could do for the first goal and looked in control throughout.

Kieran Trippier - 8

Showed what he can offer in an attacking sense, though failed to deliver from the many corners. Struggled in defence against a pacey Wolves attack. Looked to have picked up a knock late on but continued to play on.

Fabian Schar - 6

Another solid display from the new CB partnership, however, he could have easily been sent off very early into the game. It's unlikely he'll lose his spot for Liverpool, but he needs to keep his cool.

Sven Botman - 8

Botman looks at home in the league, and his cool and calm displays alongside Schar are having a huge impact

Dan Burn - 7

Had an ok game at LB, though it's clearly not at all where he wants to be playing. That said, he wasn't at fault for anything, but with Targett back he'll be looking to move back to the centre.

Joe Willock - 7

Had a few chances, but struggled to make a major attacking impact for most of the game. He was key in ASM's goal, however, with a cute chip causing Wolves to clear the ball into ASM path.

Sean Longstaff - 7

Really struggled to fill the boots of Bruno G. While he made some key blocks in the defence, he struggled to make meaningful attacking movements. However, he kept up with the pace of the game throughout and helped keep his team in the game.

Joelinton - 8

Did exactly the dirty work that's required of him. Never letting Newcastle look out of the match. It was even more important as the game went into extra time as he looked to find an extra 10%.

Allan Saint-Maximan - 9

Struggled to really get into the game for the first 88 minutes with Wolves having his number. However, a moment of pure brilliance. He caused the Wolves' defence all sorts of issues after being moved into the striker role late on.

Miguel Almirón - 7

Ran his heart out as always and had a number of good chances. The best of the attacking players before heading off.

Chris Wood - 5

Struggled to really do anything in the game. It's fair to say that Newcastle's style of play is not compatible with Wood's

Targett - 7

Looked assured when he came on, and was key alongside Fraser in securing the win.

Fraser - 7

Created problem down the left side after coming on.

Anderson - 7

Could have won it all late on after his header hit the crossbar. Was also fouled to earn us a last second FK. Continues to push for a spot amongst the starting 11.

Murphy - NA

Made a great run late on to provide the cross for what could have been a massive winner.

Ritchie - NA

Post match interview to follow

ASM on his goal

“We work hard in training, I try to put more things in my game and I practice a lot with the trainer to help me hit that volley. I am really happy to score that goal because it was important for us to draw or try to win the game.” Via NUFCTV

Howe post game

There's a massive importance to every game. We were determined to keep our unbeaten start going. The players gave everything – and never gave up. It was a great goal from Allan at the end.
