Newcastle United have been given permission to talk to Michael Olise according to reports doing the rounds on Wednesday.

It's a far more positive step than we originally thought as it was first claimed that Olise's £60million release clause only applied to clubs competing in the Champions League.

However, on reflection, that didn't make much sense given that Chelsea are the early favourites to land the 22-year-old from Crystal Palace.

It's not being claimed that if such a clause exists it's not limited to Champions League clubs, but more importantly, it is believed that there may not even be a release clause to begin with.

Crystal Palace are trying to convince Michael Olise to stay put

That may not be the case for much longer, though, as Fabrizio Romano claimed late last night that Crystal Palace have offered Michael Olise a new contract

"EXCL: Crystal Palace have offered new deal to Michael Olise, higher salary and new release clause for 2025.

"Understand despite this, Chelsea still confident as they push to agree on personal terms; it’s up to the player. Bayern and Newcastle also allowed to talk to Olise."

Newcastle have some convincing to do

Romano's update corroborates the story that the Magpies have been given permission to talk to Olise about a summer move, which is positive news.

But realistically, we aren't confident that we'll get the deal done. Olise has already expressed a desire to join Chelsea after rejecting the chance to return to the club that had him on the books for seven years at youth level last year.

We also suspect we'd struggle to compete with Bayern Munich who could offer Champions League football. However, we would be more likely to offer Olise a guaranteed starting spot in the first-team and of course, the opportunity to link up with Alexander Isak which could be very convincing.
