Eddie Howe's Friday press conference - 14th October

Eddie Howe spoke with the media this morning, ahead of the weekend's clash against Man Utd. Here is all of the topics covered, summarised/paraphrased. See the club website for the full press conference.

  • Isak is making progress but is not available for the Man Utd game
  • Saint-Maximin is in contention
  • Krafth recovery is slow progress, serious injury. In Sweden in early stages of rehab
  • Shelvey not in full training, but he’s very close and doing very well
  • Ritchie has a calf problem, uncertain how long he’s out
  • No new injuries

  • We desperately want Bruno to be happy, enjoy his football and see a long-term vision
  • We have to build positively; as long as a player sees progression and ambition, we can fulfil people’s needs
  • We want to add quality
  • You never quite know how you’ll gel with a player but he has fitted in so well and epitomises the team spirit
  • I’m all for his motivation to be a Newcastle legend; he has the quality for it, but he’s at the start of it
  • If given the opportunity, we’d do the deal (at that price) again in a heartbeat
  • Time tells on all transfers whether a deal is a good one or a bad one, this one speaks for itself
  • We didn’t think we were getting goals as part of his game, he’s been given a boost of confidence, especially aerially
  • Out of possession, he really grafts, it comes down to his passion for winning
  • Was thinking of doing the peroxide look myself; I quite like it on Bruno; he’s a special person with special hair

  • Winning is so important, changes everything
  • Bounce and a buzz in the group
  • Keen to avoid complacency and over-confidence
  • Pushing the group to want more

  • Appreciate the honesty of players regarding wanting more
  • I want high standards and high demands, so I’ll be very critical of the team when I need to be but supportive too
  • After Brentford, it was very positive; there were things we could’ve done better but we had to take the positives

  • Go in with confidence and good feeling
  • Outstanding players, great manager, they’ll develop their philosophy and style
  • We have no fear and believe that we can win
  • Three game week is a test, especially with our style of play
  • Individuals will potentially get an opportunity; the whole squad needs to be ready
  • We want to be in and around where we currently are
  • There isn’t a big difference in points as you go down the league, it’s important we keep it up
  • I watch a lot of every opponent we play in order to help build game plan and help players

  • Form is good but we need to remain calm
  • My job is to keep everyone grounded
  • A bad run of form knocks you off your target
  • Not looking for ‘statement wins’, just looking for wins
  • No interest in media opinion and predicting of the future, we can’t get involved in that

  • Important for everyone to hear that there’s a ‘team behind the team’
  • We’ve got great personalities pushing the club into the future it wants
  • Happy that supporters are aware of the work going on behind the scenes and the wider vision
  • I will hear bits and pieces (re projects); these things go on behind the scenes but they are important
  • Any improvements to the stadium to help the supporters, I’m all for
  • These are specialists fields and I concentrate on the team
  • Wouldn’t ever want to leave St James’ Park

  • Decided on schedule, will be a mixture of things.
  • Nothing finalised re going away
  • Friendlies, rest, work – a mini pre-season

  • Miggy and Murphy giving really good performances
  • There’s competition there; there’s Ryan Fraser, Maxi and Joelinton too who provide wide options
  • We’re going to need them because every game is different and there’s physical demands
  • A lot of players are disappointed whenever I name a team, but we have strength in depth at the moment
  • Everyone will have a chance to play in this period of games

  • Just look at his performances this year, he’s been incredible for us
  • The first goal against Brentford really highlighted his technical quality
  • We’ve discussed a lot of things and England is one of those, but I don’t want him to overthink things
  • I want to get him in a good place to play at his best level in the next game and the long-term picture takes care of itself
  • Kieran’s signing helped us with what followed – if X player wants to come, it must be a good environment

  • We were aware of his versatility when we signed him
  • He enjoys left-back because it enables him to get higher up the pitch

  • Matt was ill before Fulham, it was quite serious and kept him out of training for a few days

  • Would back him, whatever his decision, regarding whether to represent Scotland or not
  • He’s very impressive and putting pressure on the guys in the team
  • He’ll get more time throughout the season

  • Been assured by groundsmen that there’s nothing to worry about re the pitch
  • The pitches we work on are very good
  • Wish all the teams all the luck
