Callum Wilson has started the new season in the treatment room at Newcastle United, a place with which he is very familiar.

Newcastle brought in Sheffield United youngster Will Osula this summer which was absolutely vital as going into another season with just Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson would have been like throwing in the towel before we'd even got started. At least now we have back up for when one, or both picks up an injury.

We have started with Callum Wilson already injured which could be a big hint of what's to come this season, although, obviously, we hope that's not the case.

When Wilson picked up his latest injury Howe said that the striker would miss the first couple of games of the season.

"How many more games will you be missing for, Callum?"

Callum Wilson will not be back before the international break

We have now played the first couple of games so it was only natural that Howe was asked for an update in this morning's press conference (via The Chronicle).

"Callum is continuing his rehabilitation from injury; I am happy with his progress. He is working very hard, as he always does. We miss him, he adds a different dynamic. He is such an important character around the squad, we hope to get him back soon, but it won’t be before the international break."

Newcastle take on Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night and then Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday before the international break so it looks like Wilson will miss at least two more games.

We'll not hold our breath for a return to action against Wolves for Wilson

If we've learned anything from watching Eddie Howe's press conferences since he came to Newcastle, it's that you can never rely on what he says about when a player may or may not return to action.

While Howe never gave a return date for Wilson, we'll not be holding our breath that he will be back in action for the Wolves game on 15th September.

We really hope this is the last time we have to deal with a Wilson injury this season. He's been such a great goalscorer for the club but his many, many injuries are really starting to tarnish his reputation.
