Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon said it was 'about time' after netting his first senior England goal in the 5-0 win over Ireland on Sunday night.
Anthony Gordon is still a relatively new addition to the England set-up, with last night's game earning him his eighth senior cap, and while he has gone close to scoring a few times for his country, he finally broke his duck in the 55th minute last night volleying home a cross from club-mate Tino Livramento.
That link-up, along with Gordon being supported on the left by Lewis Hall was hopefully a glimpse into England's future with several Newcastle United stars playing for the Three Lions.
Despite only being capped eight times at senior level, Gordon is no stranger to the England set up having taken the U21s to European Championship glory under Lee Carsley last summer.
It's likely because of Lee Carsley's knowledge of the young talent that so many younger stars have featured for England in the Nations League and that's part of what was so exciting for Anthony Gordon last night.
Speaking after the game, Anthony Gordon cracked that it was about time he scored for England, but then went on to say how good it was that he could share the moment with the lads from the U21s Euros winning side.
“It’s about time. I’ve had a good few chances for England now and it hasn’t gone in, so it was nice to see the back of the net.
“It’s more so a good feeling because I got to share it with some of the lads I came through with from the U21s to now, so it is better I got to share it with them”.
Hopefully, that was the first of many to come from the flying winger who now heads back to Newcastle to prepare for next week's fixture against struggling West Ham.
Eddie Howe has challenged his players to make it three Premier League wins in a row for the first time this season, and we expect that, buoyed by their international adventures, the England trio will be fired up for this one.
Those players not called up for their country have been out in Saudi Arabia for a warm-weather training camp and should also be raring to go.
