Player of the Match Jacob Murphy spoke to NUFC TV after the game and shared whether his opening goal was deliberate or not.
Jacob Murphy got the scoring underway for Newcastle in the fourth minute against Crystal Palace this afternoon.
The 28-year-old winger dinked the ball over 'keeper Sam Johnstone and watched as the ball nestled inside the net at the far post.
It didn't look like Murphy had meant to score, but after the stunning build-up play between Fabian Schar and Kieran Trippier, it didn't really matter what the finish looked like.
Schar pinged a ball from deep in Newcastle'n half diagonally across the field to Trippier who was about 10 yards off the byline on the right-hand side of the Palace box. Tripps then pinged a first-time cushioned cross, on the volley into the area where Jacob Murphy stuck out a leg and lifted the ball into the net.
It looked to all the world that Murphy was trying to pick out Callum Wilson in the middle and despite Murphy calling it an 'amazing finish' at the start of his interview with NUFC TV, he later admitted that scoring wasn't his intention.
“I was just trying to help it into the area and sometimes you need that big of luck and it’s gone in so yeah, happy days.”
Regardless of the intent, and the linesman's flag which was later overruled by VAR, the goal counted and Newcastle put last year's trio of 0-0 draws with Crystal Palace well and truly behind them before going on to a 4-0 win.
Murphy played a part in two of the rest of the goals too setting up Anthony Gordon and Callum Wilson either side of Sean Longstaff's finish.
