Newcastle United kick-off 2024 with the worst possible fixture - away at Anfield to take on our bogey team, Liverpool.

Liverpool host Newcastle on New Year's day for an 8pm kick-off with the game being shown live on Sky Sports.

The Magpies just can't seem to beat Liverpool these days, and in fact, have not won at Anfield in 27 attempts. So we're really not looking forward to this one at all.

We've made a couple of big calls

We've gone more on the fantasy side with this prediction as we've made two big calls that Eddie Howe should make but probably won't.

Newcastle United 12
Burn and Longstaff are our big calls but we really don't think Howe will make them

Goalkeeper

Martin Dubravka - Dubravka will keep his place despite being leakier than a colander that's been used for target practice at a gun range.

Defence

Kieran Trippier - Still far from his best, but he was improved at Forest despite playing Chris Wood onside. Hopefully, after having a week of training he'll be back up to speed.

Fabian Schar - Fingers crossed Fabi can bounce back after a poor show in the last game.

Sven Botman - It's great to have him back, sure, but wasn't exactly great against Forest, but then, nobody was.

Tino Livramento - Dan Burn was horrific against Nottingham Forest and shouldn't be anywhere near this starting XI, but we bet Eddie Howe plays him anyway, For us, it has to be Tino.

Midfield

Lewis Miley - Sean Longstaff was almost as bad as Burn so Lewis Miley should keep his place in the side at his expense. The lad has barely put a foot wrong this season.

Bruno Guimaraes - As frustrating as he can be, you can't rule him out.

Joelinton - If there's ever a game where we need Joey it's this one. We need someone to get stuck in and J7 will do just that.

Forwards

Miguel Almiron - Look, we don't like it any more than you do, but the reality is, he'll play.

Alexander Isak - Can always cause Liverpool problems, it just depends whether or not the officials let him.

Anthony Gordon - Scored against Liverpool at the start of the season, can he do it again?

Confidence eludes us

You may have noticed from our other posts leading up to this game that we're not exactly confident going into this one. History is very much against us, as is our current form.

However, streaks have to come to an end eventually and why not end the 27-game Anfield hoodoo in style? Stranger things have happened ... I mean, last week Chris Wood scored a hat trick. It's a mental game.

Howay Eddie Howe's New Year New Me Mags!
